Evaluate the Effects of Coenzyme Q-10 in Early Parkinson’s Disease

This is a multi-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled, NIH-funded study to Evaluate the Effects of Coenzyme Q-10 in Early Parkinson’s disease. It is being organized by the Parkinson’s Study Group.

The duration of the study is a maxiumum of 16 months.

The study will be conducted at the Einstein Institute for Clinical and Translational Research.

Patient Inclusion Criteria:

  • Presence of the 3 cardinal features of Parkinson’s disease (rest tremor, bradykinesia and rigidity). These signs must be asymmetric.
  • Age 30 or older
  • Subject discontinued taking Coenzyme Q-10 during past 60 days (if 300 mg or less), past 90 days (if 301-600 mg) or past 120 days (if greater than 600 mg)

Patient Exclusion Criteria:

  • Use of any Parkinson’s disease medication within the past 60 days and the duration of any symptomatic treatment cannot exceed 90 days
  • Need for symptomatic treatment with dopaminergic therapy (Sinemet or dopamine agonists or amantadine) -Use of antioxidants
  • Use of neuroleptics
