Trial Information

Does Memantine Improve Verbal Memory Task Performance in Subjects with Left Temporal Lobe Epilepsy and Memory Dysfunction? A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial.

Does memantine improve verbal memory task performance in patients with left temporal lobe epilepsy and memory dysfunction? A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

Many patients with epilepsy have memory deficits. Unfortunately, the treatment options for memory dysfunction in patients with epilepsy are limited. We are conducting a study to evaluate the effects of memantine, a medication used for the treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease, for the treatment of verbal memory dysfunction in subjects with left temporal lobe seizures. The study involves randomization to memantine therapy or placebo, with cognitive testing and EEG pre- and post-treatment.

All subjects must:
•Be 18-55 years of age
•Have left temporal lobe seizures
•Be native English-speaking
•Be able to give consent
•Have self-reported memory dysfunction

Participation will require two study visits over the 13-week duration of the trial. Each subject will be offered $100 dollars for participation, parking and meal vouchers, as well as free study medication during the trial.
