Disease Category: Cardiac Surgery
Trial Information
A data collection study for cardiac surgical procedures to determine if the use of the ON-Q ÒSilverSoaker™ System [FDA approved disposable infusion pump designed to deliver anesthetic directly to the surgical site] correlates with reduced pain and the incidence of pneumonia and surgical site infections compared to the current standard of care.
Poor control of surgical pain following cardiac surgical procedures may contribute to problems after surgery and delay a patient’s recovery and cause them to have a longer stay in the hospital or clinic. In particular, poor pain control may lead to higher risk of infectious complications including pneumonia and surgical incision (cut) infection. This study will use the ON-Q ?SilverSoaker™ System, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved disposable infusion pump designed to deliver anesthetic (numbing medicine) directly to the surgical site for up to five days to relieve postoperative (after surgery) pain. This device may decrease postoperative pain and reduce the need for opioid (drug used to reduce pain) pain medications. This may help speed up your recovery and decrease length of stay in the hospital.
Patient Inclusion Criteria: Undergoing a cardiac surgical procedure. Must be at least 18 years of age or older.
Patient Exclusion Criteria: Patients with a prior allergic reaction or dependency to morphine, Demerol, Dilaudid, Fentanyl, Marcaine (bupivacaine), lidocaine or Naropin (ropivacaine); Cardiac transplant patients; inability to perform follow-up assessments; pre-existing infection (pneumonia or surgical site); repeat of primary surgery; ventilator dependency
