Brain and Nervous System: Do You or a Family Member Have Seizures?
Researchers with the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, Department of Emergency Medicine, are conducting a study to find the best way for paramedics to stop someone from seizing before they reach the hospital.
The Rapid Anticonvulsant Medications Prior to Arrival Trial (RAMPART) is a research study comparing IV Lorazepam to Midazolam given as a shot in the muscle, to determine which anti-seizure medicine works faster.
Because seizures that are not stopping on their own are dangerous and must be treated immediately, there will be no time to obtain informed consent before paramedics initiate treatment for this condition. This trial is being conducted under a special provision for emergency research involving treatment of life-threatening conditions.
