Assess the mucosal immune response to genital herpes simplex virus before and after treatment and determine if cervicovaginal fluid from herpes-infected women affects HIV in vitro
Doctors at Albert Einstein College of Medicine are looking for women ages 18-50 with a vaginal herpes blister or sore to undergo a gynecologic exam for a research study.
The purpose of this research study is to see if treating genital herpes causes a change in the cells in the vagina that protect against infection.
Your part in the study will include 3 visits within 2 weeks.
Subjects will be reimbursed for each visit and will receive anti-herpes therapy free of charge.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Age 18-50 years.
- Suspected genital herpes lesion located on the vulva, vagina, cervix or perineum.
- Agree to anti-HSV treatment.
- Agree to abstain from sexual intercourse and to use vaginal products for the duration of the study (two weeks).
Exclusion criteria:
- Pregnant, breastfeeding, or menopausal.
- HIV
- Vaginitis, UTI or STI including bacterial vaginosis (BV), trichomoniasis, candidiasis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, or syphilis within one month prior to or at screening. Abnormal Pap smear.
