Trial Information

The ACCESS Trial for lupus with kidney disease (lupus nephritis)

This study is for people with lupus who have developed complications in their kidneys (a condition called "lupus nephritis"). The study is testing whether adding the experimental medication called "abatacept" (pronounced ‘AB-uh-TA-sept) to a standard cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan) treatment regimen is more effective in improving lupus nephritis than the cyclophosphamide regimen by itself. The study drug abatacept has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis, however it is an experimental medication for lupus nephritis. Participation in the study will last for two years.
