Meningitis and Meningococcal Disease in Infants
This clinic is participating in a study of an experimental vaccine to prevent disease in infants caused by N. meningitidis, a bacterium in the meningococcus family. Every year, approximately 1400 to 2800 people in the US are infected with invasive meningococcal disease, of whom 200 to 450 are children under the age of one.
- Infants have the highest rate of this disease of any age group.
- 16% of cases occur among infants under 1 year of age.
Disease is spread by close, face-to-face contact that permits spread of saliva from someone who is a carrier or who is sick. A person can be infected suddenly and the disease can spread and worsen very quickly.
Invasive disease can take may forms:
- Meningitis (49%)
- Blood infection (33%)
- Pneumonia (9%)
Serious consequences of disease include:
- Death (10-14%)
- Deafness, limb loss, mental retardation, kidney damage, and others (11-19%)
The most common invasive disease caused by N. meningitidis is meningitis, an infection of the spinal cord and fluid that surrounds the brain. Viruses and other bacteria can cause meningitis and some forms can be prevented by routine vaccination. However, there is no vaccine currently approved for use in infants in the US to prevent meningococcal meningitis.
