A 6-week Inpatient trial for patients with Acute Exacerbation of Schizophrenia

In order to evaluate a new Schizophrenia medication we are performing a 6 week Inpatient trial where your Doctors Visits, Medication, and Lab Assessments will be included at no charge. In addition, eligible subjects earn up to $900 for participation if they complete the study. Transportation is also available from Riverside, San Bernardino, Orange and LA counties.

Patient Inclusion Criteria:

• Have a diagnosis of schizophrenia for a minimum of 1 year prior to visit 1
• Have a current psychotic episode starting < 2 weeks prior to visit 1
• Have experienced at least one episode that required hospitalization or changed antipsychotic medication or had other intervention during the year prior to visit 1

Patient Exclusion Criteria:

• Have treatment resistant schizophrenia (defined as little or no symptomatic response to at least 2 antispychotics of a therapeutic dose range and timeframe)
• Have a diagnosis of alcohol or substance abuse or dependence (except for nicotine and caffeine dependence) within 3 months prior to visit 1
• Have current suicidal or homicidal intent or had prior suicide attempt or homicide attempt in the past 2 years
• Have Hepatitis (if stable for 1 year, the clinic will need to obtain approval from Forest)
• Have a history of cataracts
• Have received electroconvulsive therapy or a depot neuroleptic in the 3 months prior to visit 2
• Have received study medication within 6 months prior to study entry
• Treatment with Clozapine in the past 10 years
• Taking any of the following meds:

Anorexics, Anticonvulsants, Antidepressants, Systemic Antifungal Agents, Antineuroleptics, Antiparkinsonian drugs, Antipsychotics, Mood Stabilizers, Muscle Relaxants or Psychotropic drugs
