Trial Information

This is a nonrandomized, blinded study of the role of hemodynamic factors in the risk of subsequent stroke in medically and surgically treated patients with Moyamoya disease

When an angiogram of your arteries in your brain shows that you have narrowing or blockage of at least one artery at the base of the brain the pattern of blockage that you have is called moya moya disease. The purpose of this research is to find out how often moya moya disease reduces blood flow and affects the use of oxygen by the brain, and to find out if these effects are related to the risk of having a stroke in the future.

Patient Inclusion Criteria:

  1. Adult > 18 years of age
  2. Capable of informed consent
  3. Clinical: Both asymptomatic and symptomatic patients will be included. The large majority of patients referred to our institution have had recent symptoms of cerebral ischemia, leading to their diagnosis of moyamoya, but a few have been asymptomatic. It will be clinically relevant to determine the prevalence of increased OEF in asymptomatic patients, as well.
  4. Anatomic: Unilateral or bilateral imaging findings consistent with moyamoya collaterals (Suzuki stages 3 and 4) on digital subtraction, computed tomographic, or magnetic resonance angiography (after Suzuki and Kodama, 1983)

Patient Exclusion Criteria:

  1. Any other disease that might be responsible for the vasculopathy, including atherosclerosis, neurofibromatosis, meningitis, sickle cell disease, skull base radiation therapy.
  2. Pregnancy: All women of child-bearing potential will be tested for pregnancy using a urine b-HCG test on the day of the enrollment and follow up PET scans.
