Trial Information

The study is looking at the metabolic side effects of the new antipsychotic medications. Participants should be stable on one of the following medications: olanzapine (zyprexa), ziprasidone (geodon), risperidone (risperdal) or aripiprazole (abilify). Patient's medications won't be changed. The study involves 3 visits at the Palo Alto VA and Stanford Hospital.

Already taking one of these medications

  • Olanzapine (Zyprexa®)
  • Ziprasidone (Geodon®)
  • Aripiprazole (Abilify®)
  • Risperidone (Risperdal®)


Stanford University Medical Center and the Palo Alto VA under Dr. Gerald Reaven and Dr. Steven Lindley are seeking volunteers for a study on certain mediations and effects on risk for type 2 diabetes. Non-diabetic volunteers on one of the medications described above will receive a free medical examination, a cholesterol panel, and test to determine personal risk for diabetes and heart disease. This study offers $320 compensation for your time.

Patient Inclusion Criteria:

  • 25 to 66 years old
  • body mass index (BMI) >25 < 35 kg/m2
  • on a stable dose of olanzapine, risperidone, ziprasidone or aripiprazole for at least 3 months.


Patient Exclusion Criteria:

  • No medications that directly affect insulin-mediated glucose disposal
  • No intense suicidal impulses/intent
  • No alcohol or substance abuse for 3 months.
  • No major medical problems, i.e., clinically unstable medical disorder or condition; cardiovascular, hepatic, renal, gastrointestinal, pulmonary, endocrine or other systemic disease that would, in the investigator's clinical judgment interfer with the endocrine measures obtained in this study.
