Fungal Antigens and Antifungal Response

For the Patients Suspected or Diagnosed with Aspergillosis

You have been asked to participate in this research study because you are undergoing cancer-related treatment such as chemotherapy or bone marrow transplantation and have been suspected or diagnosed with aspergillosis (a fungal infection). The purpose of this research is to study samples of blood, fluid from routine bronchoalveolar lavage and urine to improve methods of monitor and control fungal infections. Your participation in this study is expected to last 1 year, during which blood will be drawn up to 7 times. A portion of the fluids collected from you at a routine procedure (bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage) as well as some urine samples will also be used for the study. During the time you are participating in this study, information about your medical condition will be collected for this research from your medical records.

For the Patients at Risk of Contracting a Fungal Infection

You have been asked to participate in this research study because you are undergoing acute leukemia-related treatment such as chemotherapy or bone marrow transplantation and are at risk of contracting a fungal infection, which can lead to invasive aspergillosis. The purpose of this study is to study samples of blood, lavage fluid from routine bronchoscopies and urine to improve methods of predicting which patients might be at higher risk of developing aspergillosis. Your participation in this study is expected to last for 1 year, during which blood will be drawn up to 7 times. A portion of the fluids collected from you at routine bronchoscopies as well as some urine samples will also be used for the study. During the time you are participating in this study, information about your medical condition will be collected for this research from your medical records.

For the Healthy Adult

You have been asked to participate in this research study because you are a healthy adult. The purpose of this research is to study naturally occurring antifungal antibodies and T-cells in humans in order to further understanding of antifungal immunity. Your participation in this study is expected to last as long as you are willing to donate blood, up to 4 years. Specimen might be used for up to 4 years.
