Phase II Trial Utilizing Idarubicin in Combination with High-Dose Ara-C for Induction Therapy for Adult Acute Myelogenous Leukemia

The purpose of this research study is to 1) determine the complete remission rate, 2) to determine the number of courses of treatment required to enter remission, 3) to determine the side effects of the regimen, and 4) to determine the ability of patients with AML treated with this regimen to receive further post remission chemotherapy (consolidation chemotherapy).

Patient Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria:

- Age 16 to 60 years - Diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) - No previous chemotherapy or radiation therapy treatment for AML except Hydroxyurea - Patients will prior myelodysplasia and secondary AML are eligible - Patient must be in otherwise generally good health
