A Washington University sickle cell research study seeks participants!


Brief description of study

The purpose of the study is to improve clinical care, and patient knowledge regarding stroke in people with sickle cell disease. Participation will include 1 study visit. This visit will last 2 hours. There will be an MRI scan (1 hour) with IV contrast and one cognitive test that will take about 10 minutes. Risks and benefits will be discussed with volunteers as part of the informed consent process. Participants will receive a 75 dollar gift card for time and effort. Participants will also be reimbursed for reasonable travel expenses (taxi or parking) and receive a 10 dollar food voucher at the time of the research MRI.

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Participants must self-identify as African American
2. Participants must be 20 to 40 years old
3. Participants with and without sickle cell trait are needed
4. Participants must not have diabetes requiring medication
5. Participants must not weigh greater than 250 pounds
